Materials and finishes for wallpaper

The first element to evaluate is the backing . Vinyl wallpapers on non-woven fabric (TNT) are among the most popular: the visible side is covered with a vinyl layer that makes the surface more resistant, washable, and also suitable for environments such as kitchens and bathrooms (away from direct contact with water); the TNT backing makes installation and removal easier, because the glue is applied directly to the wall and the sheets are more stable. Wallpapers on a simple paper backing have a more traditional look and require very well-prepared walls; they are especially suitable for areas subject to little traffic, such as bedrooms and living rooms.

There are also wallpapers made of fiberglass or specific technical materials, designed for critical areas like bathrooms and showers, where they are combined with protective resins and waterproofing systems. In this case, the paper becomes a true wall covering, capable of withstanding humidity and splashes if properly protected with suitable finishes.

Surface finishes range from smooth and silky to lightly textured. Textures such as linen, fabric, fine weave, or subtle reliefs contribute depth to the design and enhance color perception, as well as partially masking small irregularities in the substrate. Smoother surfaces, on the other hand, create highly defined details, ideal for subtle graphic designs, text, or photographic subjects.

When it comes to designs , the choice ranges from micro patterns (small, regularly repeated motifs) to large panoramic graphics, designed to cover entire walls with a single motif. Botanical motifs, abstract textures, concrete effects or patterned wood paneling, 1960s-style geometric patterns or clean lines: each collection offers different themes that lend themselves to contemporary, classic, minimalist, or eclectic decor styles. Many companies also offer the option of adapting the graphics to the precise measurements of the wall, reducing cuts and improving the overall impact.

One aspect not to be overlooked is color rendering in relation to the available light. Wallpapers with dark backgrounds and contrasting patterns are very dramatic but require well-lit environments, while lighter backgrounds with softer designs are better suited to smaller rooms or those with limited natural light.

The choice of material and design is never just a matter of aesthetics: it depends on the type of room, its exposure to light, the level of daily use, and whether you want the wallpaper to be the centerpiece or a subtle background. Understanding these differences helps you identify the best solution, avoiding impulse purchases that later prove impractical in everyday life.

Highlight

• Available in many variants: vinyl, TNT, fibreglass, technical papers for bathrooms and kitchens.
• Allows for complex decorative effects (patterns, textures, fake wood paneling, panoramas) with minimal thicknesses.
• The washable and brushable versions are also suitable for heavily used environments.
• Technical papers on reinforced backing can help mask small micro-cracks.

Low Light

• Some more delicate media are not suitable for humid areas or direct contact with water.
• Very strong textures can make defects in the substrate more evident if not well prepared.
• Very strong and characteristic patterns can become tiring in the medium term if used on too many walls.
