SPC and laminate flooring: differences, advantages, and uses

At first glance, SPC and laminate floors may seem almost identical: wood-effect, plank format, floating installation, and narrow joints. In reality, what's different is the "soul" of the panel and, with it, the way it performs over time in different contexts.

Laminate is composed of a wood-based panel (usually HDF) with a high-definition decorative film and a protective surface layer applied. When properly installed and of good quality, it offers excellent value for money, a convincing aesthetic, and a warm feel. However, its wood core makes it more sensitive to humidity : standing water, leaks, or very humid environments can cause swelling, swollen edges, and warping.

SPC (Stone Plastic Composite), on the other hand, has a rigid mineral-composite core with a significant percentage of inert fillers. This makes it much more dimensionally stable and less sensitive to water: for this reason, it is often used in kitchens, bathrooms, and living areas with direct access to the outside. The surface features decorative films and wood or stone effects comparable to laminate, with generally reduced overall thicknesses.

From a comfort standpoint, good-quality laminates, combined with suitable underlays, offer a more "springy" and warm feeling underfoot, especially in bedrooms and sleeping areas. SPC, being more rigid, provides a slightly different feel underfoot: drier, yet stable and solid. Much depends on the type of underlay used and the quality of the product.

In terms of installation, both systems are often floating and interlocking , with quick installation times and the option of working on existing, level, suitable floors. SPC, thanks to its rigid core, tolerates small defects in the subfloor a little better than some very thin laminates, but it's not a solution for covering severely uneven subfloors.

In terms of use, it can be said very briefly that laminate is often the ideal choice for sleeping areas, "dry" living areas and spaces where humidity is under control , focusing on comfort and budget ; SPC is more suitable for mixed environments where the kitchen, dining area and living area communicate, or for entrances, corridors, technical bathrooms and rooms where contact with water and dirt is more likely, or in all those solutions where the budget is less tight to guarantee better performance .

The final choice is never just a technical one, but also an aesthetic and design one: colors, sizes, compatibility with underfloor heating, acoustic requirements, and maintenance expectations must be put on the table right from the start.

Highlight

• The laminate has a wooden core and offers warm comfort underfoot, ideal for dry sleeping and living areas.
• SPC has a rigid mineral-composite core, more stable and tolerant to water and humidity.
• Both are often installed floating with interlocking joints, with rapid installation times and limited thicknesses.
• The correct choice depends on water exposure, intended use, desired comfort and budget.

Low Light

• Laminate suffers from stagnant water and very humid environments if specific lines are not chosen.
• SPC, although very technical, may feel less warm to the touch than a good laminate with an adequate underlay.
