Preparing the substrate for false ceilings and false walls

The first phase consists of inspecting the existing structure . The floor is inspected to identify solid fixing points, any irregularities, old leaks, or loose plaster. Likewise, the walls that will house the false walls are assessed to determine whether they are made of brick, concrete, plasterboard, or other materials, and whether they have cracks, moisture, or significant defects.

A precise survey of the space is then performed: plan dimensions, heights, any out-of-squares, and height differences between different points on the ceiling. This data is used to determine the height of the future suspended ceiling, the thickness of the false wall, and the position of any recesses, niches, alcoves, and light openings. This phase also determines how much ventilation space is needed to accommodate electrical systems, air conditioning ducts, pipes, and lighting fixtures.

Mapping the systems is a key step. Cables, pipes, ventilation ducts, fire detectors, and other elements must be identified and, if necessary, repositioned or integrated into the design. It's important to know where the inspection points are located, which sections must remain accessible, and where the most sensitive components that must not be damaged are located.

Preparation also includes defining the type of metal structure : primary and secondary frames, wall profiles, suspended ceiling hangers, uprights and guides for false walls. In the presence of weak walls or unsuitable supports, a reinforcement system may be provided, such as self-supporting frames or structures that transfer the weight to the floor rather than the existing masonry.

It's important to check that floors and walls are sound before covering them with new cladding. Active moisture, mold, or flaking plaster can hide problems that will continue to fester over time. Therefore, before installing the flooring, any critical issues must be addressed with specific interventions: restoration, treatments, or replacement of damaged areas.

Good substrate preparation allows the false ceiling and false wall to function as intended: even planes, a stable structure, accessible systems where necessary, and no unpleasant surprises after the panels have been closed.

Highlight

• A careful check of floors, walls and fixings guarantees safe and long-lasting anchoring.
• Planning of systems (electrical, air conditioning, extraction) avoids holes and improvised modifications.
• The preliminary study of dimensions and alignments allows for the correct connection of windows, cornices and fixed furnishings.

Low Light

• Existing irregular or degraded structures may require reinforcement and preliminary interventions.
• Errors in the initial dimensions are reflected on doors, windows, wardrobes and are not easy to correct once the installation is finished.
• Overloading floors or supports with unsuitable fixings can create cracks and micro-sagging.
