Substrate preparation for soft glass laminates

Preparation begins with a thorough inspection of the glass . Check for any deep scratches, chips on the edges, old films to be removed, and residue from labels or glue. If the glass has cracks or micro-breaks, especially near the edges, it's best to consider replacing it before applying laminate, to avoid sealing an already compromised surface.

Removing old films is a delicate process: lift a corner, heat it slightly if necessary (using hot air at a controlled distance), and pull steadily, avoiding sudden tears that could leave large residues of glue. Once the film is removed, the glass must be degreased and cleaned with suitable products, often in several passes, to completely remove the previous adhesive.

The next step is a thorough cleaning . A simple spray of glass cleaner isn't enough: in many cases, a solution of water and specific detergents is used, combined with scrapers with new blades to remove limescale residue, paint drips, silicone splashes, or other contaminants. Every speck of dust left on the surface risks becoming a "dot" trapped under the laminate.

The perimeter seals, aluminum or PVC profiles, and parts in contact with the glass are also cleaned, because during installation, the water in the application solution carries dirt and residue from the surrounding area onto the film. Minimizing this contamination is essential for a clean result.

Before installing, the work environment should also be checked: a very dusty room, with drafts, ongoing work, and dirty floors increases the risk of particles ending up on the glass just as the laminate is being installed. For this reason, it's best to work in as tidy conditions as possible, with minimal dust control.

If the glass is very cold or very hot (e.g., heavily exposed to the sun immediately before application), the best time to apply the film must be determined. Extreme temperatures make it more difficult to manage the application solution and the adhesive's setting time. Working in intermediate temperature conditions helps the film adhere evenly.

Highlight

• Thorough cleaning dramatically reduces the risk of bubbles and impurities visible under the film.
• Correct removal of old films and glues gives the glass a “new” base for the new laminate.
• Checking seals, profiles and the work environment helps maintain a cleaner and more professional result.

Low Light

• Preparation can take time, especially if there is old glue, limescale or paint on the glass.
• Very dusty environments make it more difficult to avoid small defects due to trapped particles.
• Damaged, scratched or cracked glass can limit the final quality and sometimes require glass replacement.
